Every cell in the human body is made up of at least 50 percent fat. These cells need proper fats to maintain their integrity. Saturated fats are also crucial to bone health, effective against heart disease and are a great antioxidant. Research has also shown that saturated fats do not clog arteries.

However, there are those who eat fatty cuts of meat regularly in their paleo diet recipes, as well.
Legumes and grains, especially those that contain gluten, are not included in paleo diet recipes. Grains have been proven to irritate the gut lining, causing a whole host of problems. Sugar, fruit juices and processed foods are also avoided. Sugar causes insulin spikes, and insulin stores fat, causing obesity and even addiction. For those trying to lose weight, even fruit should not be eaten in abundance.

It's best to eat the allowed foods freely, when you're hungry. Paleo diet adherents are not fond of what they call 'chronic cardio.' When it comes to exercise, it's best to do short, intense sessions a few times a week, taking time off as you feel necessary. Sprinting and strength training are the preferred way to train.

The paleo diet will give you more strength and put you at a lower risk for heart disease, cancer, obesity, diabetes and a whole host of other diseases. The standard American diet preaches that we must eat a low fat diet rich in whole grains, but this diet has done nothing but wreak havoc on the health and wellness of millions of people for many years. Some top books are Robb Wolf's The Paleo Solution, The Primal Blueprint by Mark Sisson, Paleo Diet by Loren Cordain, Good Calories, Bad Calories by Gary Taubes, Nutrition & Physical Degeneration by Dr. Weston Price and The Vegetarian Myth by Lierre Keith. Angelo Coppola has a terrific podcast called Latest in Paleo as does Robb Wolf, whose podcast has the same name as his book, The Paleo Solution. Everyday Paleo is a great podcast done by Sarah Fragoso, Chrissy Gower and Dain Sandoval. The two latter podcasts are in question and answer format.

Paleo Sloppy Joe Recipe Cookbooks

Paleo cookbooks are constantly gaining popularity. Some of the best paleo diet recipes can be found in Everyday Paleo by Sarah Fragoso, The Primal Blueprint Cookbook by Mark Sisson, Paleo Comfort Foods by Julie Sullivan Mayfield, Good Meat by Deborah Krasner and Nourishing Traditions by Sally Fallon. Nourishing Traditions does not only have paleo diet recipes, allowing for grains and legumes, but nevertheless offers wonderful information on saturated fats, cultured dairy foods, fermented vegetables and fruits and how to make nutrient dense stocks and broths.

Dairy is in a gray area for many adherents to this lifestyle. While technically a 'new world' food, there are some adherents to the paleo diet who can tolerate dairy. Dairy foods are best eaten in a full fat, raw or fermented state. There are those who have lactose or casein intolerance. It's best to try avoiding dairy for 30 days and then trying it out again to see how you react. Margarine, soybean oil, corn oil, canola oil are all avoided, as are most processed and packaged foods.

Paleo Protein Shake Recipe: What To Drink While On the Paleo Diet

Paleo Protein Shake Recipe

Paleo Protein Shake Recipe

By and large, Paleo diet is all about consuming foods which are unprocessed and low-on-carb. However, did you know that the efficacy of the diet also depends on the drinks you take while on the diet plan?
Here’s help on what you should drink and what you should not drink while on the Paleo diet.
Drinks allowed on the Paleo Diet

#1: Water

According to Loren Cordain, who initiated the Paleo diet, the cavemen quenched their thirst with water because it was all they had available to them.  So while on Paleo diet, you need to drink lots of plain water.
However, to enhance the ‘flavor’ of plain water you can squeeze the juice of a lime/ lemon in the water. You can also have mineral water and coconut water.

#2: Wine and Other Alcoholic Drinks

Though Paleo diet experts advise against drinking alcohol regularly, you can consider certain types of alcohol for occasional drinking. Though the cavemen did not have access to alcohol and wine in the same form as modern people, Dr. Cordain mentions that the primitive people might have consumed some types of fermented beverages occasionally.

The alcohols permitted on Paleo diet include:

  • Red wine: because it is a good source of phytochemicals and antioxidants, like tannins, flavonoids, phenolic acids, catechins, cyanidin, resveratrol, proanthocyanidins, and flavonols.
  • Rum (only if it does not contain any additives): because it is fermented from cane sugar.
  • Tequila (made from agave) : because it contains no grain, which is forbidden on the Paleo diet.
  • Potato Vodka: Vodka is often distilled from grains. However, potato vodka is an exception.
You can check the following video for some tips on the right way to consume alcohol while on the Paleo diet.

Moving on to:

Drinks to Avoid

While on the Paleo diet, you need to avoid grain-based drinks, including:
  • Beer
  • Bourbon
  • Gin (certain varieties are processed with grain-based alcohol)
  • Whiskey
  • Vodka ( grain-based varieties)
  • Fruit Juice (Often, it is sweetened with artificial sugar. Also, it lacks the fiber that helps to safeguard from the high Glycemic response of the ‘sugary’ juice.)
  • ‘Diet’ drinks (They are loaded with artificial sweeteners)
